ST. JOHN’S, NL — On Thursday, October 6, Mysa was honoured to be named techNL’s “BDC Tech Company of the Year” for 2022. This award from the primary association for Newfoundland and Labrador’s thriving technology and innovation sector recognizes excellence in the rapidly-growing industry. It celebrates Mysa’s presence at the forefront of North America’s transition to sustainable energy and electrification - and our position as a leading innovator and employer in Newfoundland and Labrador.
At Mysa, we design, manufacture, and sell smart thermostats for electric heating and cooling systems, all controlled through the Mysa app. Since our start, our Mysa mission has been clear: to fight climate change by leading the global shift toward HVAC electrification. We believe that empowering homeowners with the right, easy-to-use tools for home energy management is a crucial step toward a sustainable, electric future. While hundreds of thousands of our energy-saving products are installed in homes across North America, we are truly a St. John’s story.
Mysa began as a home energy auditing service right here in North America’s oldest city. Our CEO and co-founder, Joshua Green, identified a gap in the market that, when filled, would benefit homeowners in our province and beyond: smart HVAC technology was emerging as a practical, modern way to help manage household energy use, but why wasn’t there an option for high-voltage electric heat?
Mysa was born. We launched our flagship product for baseboard heaters in 2018, and since then, the Mysa family of smart thermostats has grown to include industry-leading products for electric in-floor heating and mini-split heat pumps - the fastest-growing source home heating solution on the planet.
With over 120 employees (and growing), the vast majority of Mysa’s workforce is located right here in Newfoundland and Labrador. It’s in our DNA - we were first supported by Memorial University’s Centre for Entrepreneurship, we’re graduates of the Genesis Centre, and Atlantic Canadian investors like Killick Capital have continually supported our vision of a greener world. Thanks to their early and continued support, we have since secured further investment from green-tech industry heavyweights who deeply believe in our mission, such as Cycle Capital, Round13, Climate Innovation Capital, and BDC.
“Mysa is an outstanding example of a high-growth, NL-based company that is changing our community for the better,” says Florian Villaumé, CEO of techNL. “The team at Mysa is addressing one of the biggest challenges of our time with their mission to fight climate change through energy efficiency. techNL is thrilled to award Mysa with the BDC-sponsored Tech Company of the Year award for 2022.”
“techNL has always been one of our most vocal advocates, sharing our passion for innovation and our belief that technology made right here in Newfoundland and Labrador can make a positive impact on society and our planet,” shared Josh Green, Mysa CEO. “When we work together, we thrive. Alongside our local partners, we have the opportunity to shape the future of our province and make our home brighter, cleaner, and greener. We’re excited to receive this honor from techNL, but know that there is still so much more we can do together!”
